Light Sources

The world of light sources keeps on innovating and sometimes it is tricky to decide what lamps you can choose from. In this blog entry we will guide you through the world of LED: today’s light source and that of the future.

LED

LED stands for ‘Light Emitting Diode’ and it is an innovative,  technological development that has many advantages when compared to the common incandescent lamp and halogen lamp. Unlike the LED lamp, the light source translates most of its used energy to heat, rather than light. In relation to wanting to reduce CO2 levels, the European Union has forbidden the trade in incandescent lamps as of 1 September 2012. The halogen lamp is going to be phased out in 2016. That is why you can choose from a variety of LED lamps at The Blue Art Barn Lighting. The LED lamp costs more than a conventional incandescent lamp, but it will pay for itself because of the following advantages:

- LED lighting saves energy; it is good for your wallet and the environment.

- Long life span. An LED lamp lasts about 50,000 hours. In comparison: an incandescent lamp lasts about 1000-1500 hours, a halogen spotlight 2000-4000 hours and a modern CFL lamp 6000-10.000 hours. In short: the LED lamp lasts 8 times longer than an old fashioned incandescent lamp.

- The LED lamp is the fastest lamp when compared to other light sources. In a fraction of a second, the LED light source gets to its full strength. There is no need for the LED Lamp to warm up, as is the case with CFL lamps.

- Unlike with CFL lighting, there is no poisonous mercury in LED lighting,

Colour temperature

It is often thought that LED lamps only give off cold, blue light, but this is definitely no longer the case in 2015! LED lighting is available in all sorts of different colours. At The Blue Art Barn Lighting you can opt for ‘warm white’, a colour of light that feels just as warm as that of the average incandescent lamp. The temperature of a light source is measured with the unit Kelvin (K). In short: the lower the value in Kelvin, the warmer the light. The colour temperature of an incandescent lamp is about 2800K. The Blue Art Barn Lighting offers LED lighting with a Kelvin value of 2700 and even 2500, so with even warmer light than the incandescent lamp!

Lumens and Watts

The light output of LED lamps is measured in Lumens rather than Watts. Pay attention to this when purchasing a light source. Below you will find an easy rule of thumb and schedule that you can use to compare Watts to Lumens.

Lumens : 10 = Watts Incandescent lamp (approximately)

Watts incandescent lamp x 10 = Lumens (approximately)

    Incandescent Watts               Light Output
15 Watts 100 to 150 Lumens
25 Watts 200 to 300 Lumens
40 Watts 400 to 500 Lumens
60 Watts 700 to 850 Lumens
75 Watts  900 to 1100 Lumens
100 Watts > 1300 Lumens

Types

There are different types of models available when it comes to LED lamps, such as globes or candles with an E-14 or E-27 socket. The Blue Art Barn Lighting also has a stunning LED filament lamp in its collection. The clear glass has been given a golden glow. This gives the lamp an authentic look. The LED filament lamp is perfect for fittings that have a visible light source. A classic design with today’s technology! The Blue Art Barn lighting also has various LED light sources that can be dimmed.
