Mother-of-pearl is a material that is used in many cultures to make utensils or art objects. Mother-of-pearl is found on the inside of shells. It serves to protect shellfish from external influences. Another function is to smooth the inside of the shell.
The material is valued for its natural lustre and subtle colour variations, including white, cream, pink and green. The different colours are reflected at different angles when looking at the mother-of-pearl. The use of mother-of-pearl in art objects dates back to the Shang dynasty in China (c. 1750 BC – 1122 BC).
Iridescent glass
The Coloured by Art© collection is a surprising Tiffany collection! The lamps and decorations are made of glass in fantastic colours. The glass is reminiscent of a watercolour painting, especially when daylight plays with it or artificial light is added. The iridescent effect, a pearly sheen in which rainbow colours can be subtly discovered, is particularly graceful. Light reveals the beautiful gradations of the colour shades.
