Everyone knows them, the beautiful, colourful stained-glass lamps. We know them as Tiffany lamps. They owe their name to the designer and glass artist Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933). Inspired by the stained glass windows of the cathedral turn in Chartes, he started experimenting with coloured glass. He ingeniously applied the stained-glass technique to lighting. Just when his good friend Edison had invented the light bulb.
Tiffany technique
These beautiful lamps are still made according to the traditional Tiffany technique. Tiffany lamps are made of a 'mosaic' of pieces of glass, surrounded by bronze whimsical forms. The glass is built up according to traditional methods. In a specially made mould, the cut pieces of glass are puzzled together. The glass parts are wrapped in copper foil and soldered together. The shapes and colours often originate from nature. Think of flower and animal designs. Sometimes, the glass is heated and bent to create a beautiful flowing shape. But the designs can just as well be geometric. The variety of Tiffany lamps is great.
The basis of every Tiffany lamp is the mixing and kneading of red-hot glass paste in various colours. The glass paste is then rolled out on a flat or profiled plate. This technique ensures that the texture of the glass pieces can be very varied. Since the lamps are made by hand, it is possible that a small bubble or spot of colour appears in the glass. This should not be seen as an unevenness, but as a characteristic of the manual craft. This is what makes every Tiffany lamp from De Blauwe Deel Verlichting so unique.
