Curvilinear Art Nouveau Lamps

The Art Nouveau or Jugendstil style was a new movement that originated around 1880. Art Nouveau artists were looking for a new, original style and they preferred traditional crafts and were mostly inspired by nature. Elegant stylised plants (cow’s parsley) and flowers (lilies, irises, poppies, rosebuds), mushroom shapes, birds (swans, peacocks), dragonflies and other animals are just some of the many popular designs by Art Nouveau artists. Due to the lively, elegant lines, the movement was also called ‘the whiplash style’. Some well-known Art Nouveau artists were Victor Horta, Henry van de Velde and Emile Gallé. The Blue Art Barn Lighting has spectacular lamps in its collection that are based on the designs of these legends. The whimsical shapes of the Amsterdam School lamp collection also go well in interiors and houses in the Jugendstil style. Glass lampshades in a marble edition reflect the fanciful atmosphere of the Art Nouveau style. The sphere is a classic, round shape that was already popular during the Jugendstil period. The spherical lamp, for instance in marble or soft yellow, is a favourite of The Blue Art Barn and also perfectly suitable for authentic interiors.

Geometrical Art Nouveau Lamps

Besides the more famous curvilinear or decorative Art Nouveau style there was also an influential geometrical Jugendstil movement. These artists focussed on sleek lines and mathematical motifs. The most famous movement is the Wiener Secession or Wiener Werkstätte, which was home to Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann and Otto Wagner. In Great Britain, Jugendstil was represented by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who formed his own type of Art Nouveau: “The Glasgow Style”  and brought ‘new art’ to everyone’s attention. The Blue Art Barn has a stunning collection of Art Nouveau lighting, based and inspired on original designs of Josef Hoffmann and Charles Rennie Mackintosh among others. The elegant, mathematical interplay of lines created by Hoffmann and the stylised roses by Mackintosh can immediately be recognised in the lovely lamps.
